Friday Five

I’ll admit this is not the most inspired Friday Five post; I’ve been taking it easy and resting my poor, tired feet a lot since returning from Comic-Con so I haven’t been out and about seeing cool stuff in DC as much as usual!

1. Double Rainbow: this week we’ve been having surprise evening storms (by “surprise” I mean that my iPhone weather app didn’t predict any rain), and last night brought us a doozy. But with it came the benefit of a stunningly bright double rainbow, which I was able to see quite a bit of from our deck! The rainbows lasted awhile, too—the main, brighter one you see in the below photo stuck around for about a half an hour. I don’t know if this is typical for double rainbows and it’s not something I’ve ever noticed before, but the colors of each one actually mirror that of the other. You can see that the second rainbow (the fainter one) has its reds along the underside, while its purples and blues run along the top. The first rainbow has the standard red on top, purple on the bottom. Pretty magical, right?!

Play! by Sephora: July 2017

My July Sephora Play! box arrived late in the afternoon the day before I left for Comic-Con, so I was too busy packing to start playing around with my samples. I did take a couple of them with me to San Diego, though, and now that I’m back home I’ve finally had a chance to use each sample a few times so that I could sneak in my blog post before August!

1. Bizarre States: last year I randomly ended up at a panel for this podcast when I went to Camp Conival, and it was very entertaining. For some reason I only recently thought to start listening to the podcast, but once I started I was hooked. I’ve been on a total Bizarre States binge! Andrew Bowser and Jessica Chobot keep me company while I’m at home cleaning or out walking, and their guests are always interesting. I’m a total skeptic when it comes to ghosts, aliens, and other supernatural phenomena, but I love hearing stories about that stuff (duh, I’ve watched all twelve seasons of Supernatural). I missed their panel at Awesome Con, but I was happy to be able to go to their SDCC panel this year!

San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Recap

I’m pleased to report that I returned from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con feeling much happier than I did last year! The 2016 con was pretty rough for me, and by the end of it I felt like I didn’t know how many more of these I could take. Fortunately 2017 turned out to be way better, even though the exhibit hall mostly looked like this:

San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Bingo

I can’t believe Comic-Con 2017 is already upon us—it begins this Thursday! As I mentioned, this will be my ninth consecutive year (check out my updated SDCC tips for newbies if you haven’t already seen them). As with the last couple of years, I put together a bingo game for my group of friends to play as we experience the sights, sounds, butt cracks, and—yes—smells of the con.

There’s no *actual* prize for getting bingo, but it certainly bestows bragging rights upon you. If you’re going with a group, feel free to offer a prize for the winner within your own group of Comic-Con buddies!

Mark the squares off as you spot them, and when you get bingo feel free to take a pic and post to Instagram and/or Twitter and tag it: #SDCCBingo

Have a great time at #SDCC2017, nerds!  🙂

This bingo game is in no way affiliated with San Diego Comic-Con or the San Diego Convention Center. I’m just a nerd looking to have a little fun with other nerds.

Friday Five

Quick note: next week I’ll be at San Diego Comic-Con and most likely won’t have a chance to put together a Friday Five post, so if you don’t see one, that’s why!

1. The Red Hen: John and I celebrated our fourth anniversary a little early with dinner last Saturday at this amazing Italian joint in DC’s Bloomingdale neighborhood. The menu changes periodically to showcase seasonal ingredients and all pastas are handmade. We shared two appetizers (fresh burrata and cauliflower “Sicilian Style”) and two vegetarian pastas (ricotta cavatelli and bucatini cacio e pepe). They have a really interesting wine list and our server was also a sommelier so he had great suggestions. Everything was amazing, but the bucatini was out of this fucking world. I’m still thinking about it. WE HAVE TO GO BACK.

Tips for 2017 San Diego Comic-Con Newbies

ORIGINALLY POSTED JULY 16, 2016. REPOSTED AND UPDATED FOR 2017.

San Diego Comic-Con 2017 begins next week, and it will be my NINTH consecutive year! Needless to say,  I’ve learned a lot about how SDCC works and have picked up many tips and tricks along the way. The internet is filled with SDCC survival guides, packing tips, and other advice, but I’d like to add some of my own tips as well as things you can expect if you’re attending SDCC for the first time. Apologies for the lengthy post—I have a lot to say!

1. Happy Independence Day from Walter the Cat: this ridiculous image is brought to you by Instagram Stories and all of the silly/fun stickers you can slap on your photos and videos. My favorite thing about this pic is Walter’s incredibly unimpressed expression.

Play! by Sephora: June 2017

My June 2017 Play! by Sephora box arrived last week but I’ve had trouble getting myself to sit down and write about it. It’s not that it was a bad batch of samples; I simply wasn’t overly excited about them, so it’s been harder to motivate myself to write this post. But here I am, making it happen on the final day of June!

1. tarte cosmetics Tight & Bright Multi-Mask: If you read my blog regularly you know how much I love tarte and face masks. So when the brand released this dual mask I simply had to have it in my arsenal! The purple mask is for detoxifying, exfoliating, and purifying, and the gold mask is for hydrating and firming. You can use each one all over your face, or you can spot treat using both simultaneously (hence the term “multi-mask”). How fun!!
